How do I launch To-do List? / I can't find the To-do List icon

When you install To-do List it is added to the Startup folder of the Windows Start menu. This means that Windows will launch To-do List whenever you start your computer.

If you click the Close button (the small cross) in the top right hand side of the To-do List window To-do List will be "closed" to the System Tray - this is the area near the clock. (You can change this behavior in the To-do List Preferences if you wish.)

On Windows XP some items in the System Tray may be automatically hidden by Windows, in this event you need to click the round blue arrow button found to the left of the System Tray to expand it and show all icons.

To restore To-do List simply double-click its System Tray icon. You can also close To-do List entirely when it is in the System Tray by right-clicking the To-do List icon and selecting Exit. If you later wish to restart To-do List you can do so by going to Start > Programs > Startup > To-do List.

I can see To-do List in the Task Bar, but can't see the program on the screen

If you can see To-do List in the Task Bar (but not in the System Tray) and clicking on its button in the Task Bar does not make it visible then it is probably somewhere off the visible area of the screen. The most frequent cause of this is reducing the screen resolution (for example from 1024x768 to 800x600), thus reducing the desktop area and leaving To-do List outside the visible area of the desktop.

You should be able to recover To-do List by doing the following:

  1. Click the To-do List button in the Task Bar so that it becomes highlighted
  2. Press the [SPACE] bar whilst holding down the [ALT] key, then press the [M] key, this should now display a small menu somewhere at one of the screen edges
  3. Press any one of the arrow keys, this will transfer control of the window position to the mouse
  4. Without clicking any of the mouse buttons move the mouse towards the centre of the screen, the To-do List window should follow

I have just got a new computer, how do I transfer my To-do List tasks from the old computer to the new one?

You will need a USB flash drive, floppy disk or other removable storage medium to perform this task. If you are using a floppy disk the drive letter will probably be A, for a flash drive it will probably have the letter E or higher. You should check what letter your removable storage is on, and substitute this letter where you see <DRIVE> in the instructions below.

If you haven't already, on the NEW computer:

  1. Install To-do List
  2. Enter your license code information

Then carry out the following steps on your OLD computer:

  1. Close To-do List if it is running
  2. Insert the flash drive or disk, this will be used to transport the data to the new machine
  3. Click on Start > Run... and copy and paste the following into the box, replacing <DRIVE> with the letter of your removable storage drive, then click OK:
  4. Wait a few seconds for the data to transfer
  5. Use Windows Explorer or My Computer to check the contents of the disk, there should be file called TDL.REG

Now take the USB flash drive or disk to your NEW computer and carry out the following steps (this will wipe any new tasks added on the new computer, so print them out first if you want to keep a record):

  1. Insert the flash drive or disk
  2. Close To-do List if it is running
  3. Click on Start > Run... and copy and paste the following into the box then click OK:
  4. Click Yes when prompted to add the information to your registry
  5. Run To-do List, all your tasks and settings should have been transferred

How do I remove To-do List from my PC if it is not visible in the Add/Remove Programs list?

Usually when customers contact us with this problem it is because they have not waited for the Add/Remove Programs list to load fully. Windows can take a little while to fully populate this list after you have opened it, and the list does not always load sequentially.

If, after double-checking the Add/Remove Programs list, To-do List is still not visible, the easiest way to reliably and completely remove it is to make sure it is not running, then install To-do List again, then try again at uninstalling it. If this still doesn't work please contact us and we will be happy to provide further assistance.

To-do List is refusing to run because I adjusted my system clock. How do I get it going again?

On the unregistered version of To-do List this problem can occur when you adjust your PC clock. Please contact us via the Licensing / Download Problem support form and we will tell you how to correct this.
